Introduction to Oregon White Oak
Oregon white oak live edge is a great choice for wood slab projects because of its natural beauty. The wood is a light golden color, with a subtle figuring that adds character to the slabs. It is also very durable, making it a good choice for projects that will be used outdoors. This article discusses the characteristics of Oregon white oak, as well as the differences between using oak and maple for live edge wood slab projects.
Characteristics of Oregon White Oak Wood
Oregon white oak wood has tight growth rings, which are responsible for giving it its whitish color. The tighter grain makes this an easier species to work with than some other hardwoods. However, because of the tight grain structure, you need to be careful not to tangle your saw blades when cutting through these logs. If you don’t frequently cut oaks yourself, but want to experiment with this wood in your shop, consider purchasing an affordable log first and practicing on it before tackling large projects.
Differences between using oak and maple for live edge slab projects
Oak and maple are two of the most popular types of hardwood for live edge slab board projects. Oak is a strong, dense wood that is resistant to decay, while maple is a softer wood that tends to stain and darken over time. The benefits of using oak are stability and durability. The benefits of maple are its color and natural look, which allows the grain to be seen more easily than with oak.
A wide range of hardwood species can be used for live edge slab projects including cherry, walnut, padauk, red and white oak, santos mahogany, purpleheart and yellowheart to name a few. Oak is pretty much available everywhere in North America, while maple tends to grow mostly in the northern part of the continent where it has better conditions for growing big trees. Maple trees have been known to grow to 90 feet tall with an average trunk diameter of 30 inches.
Live edge boards can be used for a variety of decorative and functional pieces. My favorite way to use live edge wood is to make my own slab tables, slab tabletops or side tables with them because I like the look of the natural bark edges that are created when they’re cut from their host trees.
